For 15 years, Mathewos Feleke Balcha has dedicated his career to elevating the voices of rural communities in Ethiopia. A journalist, producer, and editor with deep roots in a farming village, he brings a lived understanding of the challenges faced by small-scale farmers—especially women whose experiences are often overlooked. His 12-year partnership with Farm Radio International has shaped his mission to use radio as a tool for empowerment, learning, and social change. He was recognized as a runner-up for the 2026 George Atkins Communication Award.
Inspired by his upbringing in a poor farming family, Mr. Balcha entered broadcasting to ensure that farmers’ knowledge and concerns would no longer go unheard. Over the years, he has produced and led programs that highlight food security, gender equality, modern farming practices, and climate change.
Mr. Balcha has extensive experience as a producer, reporter, program team leader, and editor. He skillfully blends diverse radio formats—drama, interviews, panel discussions, and listener interactions—to create programs that resonate deeply with rural audiences. By integrating voices from the Uliza platform, field visits, phone calls, and text messages, he ensures that farmers shape the conversation and see themselves reflected in the content.
One of his notable achievements is helping shift attitudes around gender roles in rural households. Through programs featuring couples who share responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, and collecting firewood, he has encouraged open dialogue and inspired behavioural change among listeners. Many describe his programs as practical, transformative, and supportive in balancing farming and family life.
His long-standing collaboration with Farm Radio International has equipped him with specialized training in program design, rural communication, conservation agriculture, and climate reporting. He has received certificates and recognition for his contributions, strengthening both his skills and the impact of his programs.
A passionate communicator and advocate, Mr. Balcha continues to champion the rights and stories of small-scale farmers. His commitment to excellence in broadcasting and community engagement has made him a trusted and influential voice in Ethiopia’s rural communication landscape.
