Fidelis Dauri, a broadcaster at Jirapa FM in Ghana’s Upper West region, has dedicated over a decade to using radio to bridge information gaps in rural communities. Growing up in a farming community with limited access to information, Mr. Dauri  was inspired to pursue a career in development communication, bringing essential agricultural, health, and social information to underserved populations.

Collaborating with organizations like GIZ, USAID, and UNICEF,  Mr. Dauri has covered topics such as agriculture, health, nutrition, and peacebuilding, creating content that resonates with his listeners. To ensure inclusivity, he broadcasts in multiple local languages, making his programs accessible to all.

Mr. Dauri hosts two weekly shows: the Farm Radio Green Leaf Program, which shares knowledge to boost rural resilience and livelihoods, and a program promoting peace and social cohesion, tackling issues like herder-farmer conflicts. Through these programs, he supports communities in addressing their challenges and fostering unity.

One major obstacle for farmers in Ghana’s Upper West region is the limited access to agricultural extension services. Aware of this need, Mr. Dauri  reached out to Farm Radio International for training, which helped him shape the Green Leaf Program into one of Jirapa FM’s most popular shows. The program’s dynamic format, featuring mini-dramas, expert interviews, and community dialogues, engages listeners and fosters a sense of ownership in the topics discussed. Mr. Dauri enriches his broadcasts with local music and storytelling, making information culturally relevant and memorable.

Feedback from listeners has been overwhelmingly positive, with farmers frequently expressing gratitude for the practical advice provided in local languages. Remarkably, 14 farmers who regularly tune into Mr. Dauri’s programs have won “Best Farmer” awards, crediting his broadcasts for their success.

Since joining Farm Radio’s network in 2014, Mr. Dauri has taken part in numerous training sessions that have sharpened his skills in rural communication. These sessions have also provided him with valuable insights on key topics such as sexual and reproductive health, further enhancing his ability to address important community issues through his broadcasts. His dedication to rural development, backed by FRI’s resources, continues to inspire and empower communities across Ghana.
