World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on June 5. It is a “people’s day,” inspiring individuals to do something positive for the environment, and forging individual actions into collective power that makes a positive impact on the planet.

The theme for WED this year is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.” The well-being of humanity, the environment, and the global economy ultimately depend on managing the planet’s natural resources responsibly. But the evidence is growing that people are consuming far more natural resources than our planet can sustainably provide.

With the human population expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050, the United Nations estimates that we would need three planets to sustain our current patterns of consumption and production until that date.
