There is no foolproof method or formula for interviewing people who have survived traumatic events such as violence, crime, disasters, or accidents. Each case is unique and presents its own challenges.

This resource from the Global Investigative Journalism Network offers tips for conducting humane, sensitive, and respectful interviews in these cases.

Key issues discussed in the resource include:

  • The safety of those being interviewed (especially to avoid re-traumatizing them).
  • Protecting information.
  • The safety of the colleagues we work with.
  • Your own personal safety.

This resource is available in English, French, and Portuguese.
