International Women’s Day is held annually on March 8. The Day is an opportunity to reflect on progress, to call for change, and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their communities and countries.

This year’s theme, Empowering Women – Empowering Humanity: Picture It!, conjures up a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices – participate in politics, get an education, earn an income, and live in a society free from violence and discrimination.

In 2015, International Women’s Day will highlight the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which set the agenda for achieving women’s rights. While there has been much progress since then, serious gaps remain. International Women’s Day is a time to uphold women’s achievements, recognize challenges, and focus greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality and mobilize everyone to do their part.
