International Women’s Day is held annually on March 8. The Day is an opportunity to celebrate the work of ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their communities and countries, and to reflect on progress and call for change.

The intention of this year’s theme—Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality—is to build momentum for the effective implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals, especially goal number five: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, and number 4: Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.

In 2016, International Women’s Day will also focus on new commitments under UN Women’s Step It Up initiative, and existing commitments on gender equality, women’s empowerment, and women’s human rights.
