Across Africa, instant payment systems are expanding rapidly. However, public understanding, accountability, and inclusive storytelling have not kept pace. This is an opportunity for journalists to look beyond product launches and technology announcements to examine how digital payment systems work in practice, who benefits from them, and who may still be excluded.

At the same time, many journalists face barriers including limited technical knowledge, restricted access to data, and sustained support to cover these issues deeply. Applications are now open for the AfricaNenda Foundation‘s specialized training program for journalists. Through practical sessions, access to experts, and peer learning, participants will strengthen their ability to interpret data, identify underreported stories, and examine how payment systems affect people and communities across the continent.

To apply, select a priority topic from the provided list and pick a story angle. Pitch the story and commit to producing it, including a signed letter from your editor. Your application must also include a resume / CV, motivation letter, and two samples of published work.

Applications are due 30 August 2026.

The training will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, in October 2026.

Applications are open to early- to mid-career journalists and financial, development, or gender reporters from across Africa. AfricaNenda Foundation particularly encourages applications from female journalists and journalists based in South Sudan, Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Rwanda, Cape Verde, and countries from the West African Economic and Monetary Union.
