In cooperation with the taz Panter Foundation―a non-profit organization linked to the Berlin daily newspaper die tageszeitung (taz)—Reporters Without Borders Germany has created the Rest and Refuge Scholarship. The scholarship provides time out for journalists from countries in crisis or at war.

Journalists who need time out from difficult working conditions can apply if:

  • They have covered stories in an oppressive environment
  • They have covered stories in situations of war or civil unrest
  • They feel the need to lie low and avoid state security

The scholarship provides travel expenses and covers accommodation costs, spending money and transportation, enabling journalists to stay in Berlin, Germany, for up to three months.

Participants must be able to communicate in basic English or German. They must also intend to return to their country after three months.

The deadline to apply is June 30, 2015.
