Sexual and reproductive health and rights are influenced by much more than access to health services. Social and gender norms, cultural beliefs, stigma, misinformation, unequal power relations and barriers to services can all affect people’s ability to make informed decisions about their bodies, health and well-being.

Broadcasters have an important role to play in creating spaces where these issues can be discussed openly and responsibly. But covering sensitive topics such as consent, child and forced marriage, sexual violence, infertility, menstruation and reproductive choices can also raise difficult questions: How do we challenge harmful beliefs without alienating our audiences? How do we ensure that the information we share is accurate? And how do we make sure that vulnerable and marginalised voices are included?

The online discussion will cover topics such as:

    • Social and gender norms shaping SRHR – exploring how beliefs, traditions, gender expectations and misconceptions influence sexual and reproductive health and rights.
    • Consent, marriage, sexual violence and protection – discussing consent and bodily autonomy, child and forced marriage, sexual violence and responsible approaches to these sensitive issues.
    • Reproductive choices, health information and access to services – exploring family planning and child spacing, reproductive health information, barriers to services, stigma and misinformation.
    • SRHR rights, inclusion and responsible broadcasting – examining rights, disability and inclusion, marginalised voices and how broadcasters can communicate about SRHR accurately, sensitively and responsibly.

These topics will be explored through a facilitated WhatsApp discussion, where participants will have an opportunity to share experiences, discuss situations from their communities, ask questions and learn from one another. Resource persons with expertise in SRHR will also join the conversation to share insights, clarify key issues and contribute practical guidance.

Whether you are currently producing programmes on SRHR or would like to strengthen your knowledge and confidence in covering these issues in the future, we invite you to join the conversation.

    Discussion period: October 19 – November 13, 2026
