To mark World Environment Day, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has launched a free online course, Reporting Climate Change: Tips from the IFJ. The course was developed through a Union to Union (UTU)-funded project and the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change.
As climate change continues to affect communities around the world, journalists play a vital role in helping audiences understand its causes, impacts, and potential solutions. The course aims to strengthen journalists’ ability to report accurately on climate issues while addressing misinformation, disinformation, and greenwashing.
The self-paced course includes practical guidance on:
- Understanding the science of climate change
- Finding and developing climate stories
- Identifying reliable sources and experts
- Reporting on the impacts of climate change on communities
- Challenging misinformation, disinformation, and greenwashing
- Staying safe while covering environmental stories
The course also emphasizes the importance of providing context in climate reporting and amplifying the voices of affected communities, including workers and vulnerable populations.
