Zimbabwe: Government protects water by tripling extraction price

Zimbabwe’s national water authority has tripled the price it charges private water firms to extract groundwater in an effort to protect the fast-depleting resource.

The country is already facing unpredictable rainfall and uncertain replenishment of dams. Officials say that the increase in private pumping of groundwater not only threatens the water supply but increases the cost of accessing water.

Companies say the higher charges may put them out of business, while consumers state they will end up paying the higher costs.
