West Africa: UN warns one million people could be hungry by March because of Ebola

United Nations agencies warn that half a million people in three West African nations are going hungry, and that the number could double by March if food supplies do not improve.

In Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, workers have been staying away from markets and fields for fear of spreading the virus that has killed nearly 7,000 people since March, 2014.

Border closures and quarantines are disrupting supply chains, hindering market access and worsening shortages.

Bukar Tijani is the Food and Agriculture Organization’s representative for Africa. He says: “The outbreak has revealed the vulnerability of current food production systems and value chains in the worst Ebola-affected countries.”
