The World Health Organization says that it is urgent to rebuild health care systems in West Africa to provide basic services and confront diseases other than Ebola.
According to a senior WHO official, recovery plans in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone will cost $2.3 billion, and donors will need confidence in good governance before they provide more funds.
Dr. Ruediger Krech of WHO says: “If we want to ensure that this crisis doesn’t happen again, we need altogether to come up with this money. We must reverse the trend in global health where we wait for the fire to flare up, run to put it out, but then forget to fireproof the building.”
