UNICEF says that more than two million people, including 1.4 million children, have been displaced from their homes as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency. Thousands have died in the last six years.
UNICEF stated: “In northern Nigeria alone, nearly 1.2 million children—over half of them under five years old—have been forced to flee their homes. An additional 265,000 children have been uprooted in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.”
UNICEF has received only one-third of the US$50 million it needs this year to respond to countries in the Lake Chad region affected by the fighting. This is creating shortfall in measles vaccinations and other aid.
