Farmers in poor countries suffer serious economic losses after natural disasters, according to a recent UN study. Small-scale farmers, herders and fishing communities are particularly vulnerable.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization report says that floods, droughts, storms, and other natural disasters cost the agricultural sectors in developing countries up to $70 billion U.S. between 2003 and 2013.
José Graziano da Silva is the Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. He says that, to protect farmers, developing countries need to “enhance preparedness to respond quickly when disasters occur.”
