Democratic Republic of Congo: Radio journalist murdered in northern Equateur province

Radio journalist Soleil Balanga was murdered on April 16. Mr. Balanga was attacked by an assailant as he returned home from Monkoto Community Radio, based in the village of Monkoto.

According to Radio Okapi, he was attacked because he broadcast a report referring to the appointment of a new supervisor of Monkoto’s general hospital. The police have arrested the reported killer.

Cléa Kahn-Sriber is the head of the African desk of Reporters Without Borders. She says, “We condemn this shocking murder and call on the police and justice system to conduct a proper investigation and punish those responsible.”

The 2015 Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index ranks the DRC 150th out of 180 countries.
