Burundi: Thousands flee as election tensions rise

Thousands of Burundians have fled their country, fearing violence ahead of a presidential election scheduled for June.

Justin Rwasa is one of about 4,000 Burundians who have sought refuge in neighbouring Rwanda. He says, “Burundi is sitting on a time bomb and it’s sad that the outside world does not care.”

Burundian officials have visited Rwanda to persuade refugees that it is safe to return home. President Pierre Nkurunziza met his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame last week. Officials say they discussed ways of returning the refugees to Burundi to take part in the elections.
