Key actors working towards women’s empowerment in Africa met last week in Addis Ababa to discuss the major barriers preventing gender equality in the continent.

The 8th African Union Gender Pre-Summit listed a number of factors as the main obstacles to equality between men and women, including: economic exclusion, financial systems that perpetuate discrimination, limited participation in political and public life, lack of access to education, gender-based violence, harmful cultural practices, and exclusion of women from peace tables.
