Farmers depend on the weather for a good harvest. But the changing climate means that even experienced farmers must adjust their practices and better understand which crops to grow, when to plant, and when to harvest.
Different signs can help predict the weather, including the behaviour of plants, animals, and clouds. And planning for the weather can make the difference between a good harvest and a bad one.
This week’s Resource is a video from Access Agriculture that shows how farmers in Bolivia are keeping records of the weather, crop status, and farm practices in a personal notebook called a “Pacha Grama.” This information helps them understand weather patterns and plan for the season, and use last year’s record to help plan for next year. The video also provides tips on how to learn about predicting the weather from other farmers and how to make the best farming decisions based on the weather.
