Information and communications technology (ICT) Works is offering a total of $6,000 USD in fellowships for African Women Data Journalists.
The Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) is the largest and longest study on the gender gap in media today. GMMP studies women’s presence in media content in relation to men, gender bias, and stereotyping.
Along with working towards eliminating this gender imbalance, ICT Works is offering a $1,000 project grant each for up to six journalists. The grant is in addition to intensive one-on-one mentoring and technical support from a team of data analysts, digital designers, software engineers, multimedia producers, and other journalists.
The goal of the WanaData fellowships is to teach basic data journalism skills, or expand the knowledge of those who already have experience by taking on an ambitious project in either Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.
Applicants must be established journalists or digital storytellers with a minimum of one year’s experience working in media and a portfolio of published work. Applicants must be based in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda, as well as being affiliated with a media partner.
