Artificial Intelligence (AI) is shaping our world—but it also reflects the biases and stereotypes found online. At the same time, AI can help uncover and challenge those very biases.

Are you a woman journalist in Kenya interested in using AI tools to strengthen your reporting, find new stories, and challenge media bias? The African Women Journalism Project (AWJP) and DW Akademie are launching the Gender + AI Fellowship, a six-month program (October 2025–February 2026) that explores how AI affects women and gender-diverse communities in Kenya.

    Fellows will learn how to:

    • Use AI for gender-sensitive reporting.
    • Analyze large datasets, detect bias, and amplify underrepresented voices.
    • Report on the gendered dimensions of tech policy, data justice, surveillance, access, and inclusion.

    Program structure:

    • Training: Online sessions on AI literacy, gender-sensitive reporting, and AI–gender intersections.
    • Mentorship: One-on-one guidance from senior journalists, including editorial coaching and support with data analysis and visualization.
    • Story production: Fellows will receive microgrants and produce at least four high-quality stories on AI and gender in areas such as governance, development, finance, education, health, and climate.
    • Showcase: Presentation of completed stories and networking with peers and media partners.

    Eligibility:

    • Open to women journalists in Kenya, including staff and freelancers.
    • Priority for those in Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley (including Turkana), Central, and the Coastal Region.
    • Must have proficiency in English, access to stable internet and a computer, and a commitment to publish stories.
    • Must submit a letter of intent to publish from an editor or outlet.

    Benefits:

    • Microgrants for story production.
    • Access to AI tools, editorial and data support.
    • Mentorship from Kenyan and international journalists.
    • Networking opportunities and a certificate of completion.
