Are you a journalist uncovering hidden truths and holding the powerful to account? The African Investigative Journalist of the Year Award honours outstanding investigative reporting from across the continent. Run by the Wits Centre for Journalism and supported by Absa Africa, the award recognizes stories that reveal untold issues, challenge those in power, and serve the public interest.

The winning journalist or team will receive a US$5,000 cash prize, along with flights, accommodation, and conference fees to attend the African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC). Finalists will have their costs covered as well.

Who can apply?
This award is open to African journalists or teams working in any medium (radio, TV, print, or digital), for stories from and about Africa that were published or broadcast in African media between July 2024 and June 2025.

What are the judges looking for?

  • Originality and impact of the story
  • Investigative techniques, courage, and persistence
    Public service value
  • Smart problem-solving and innovative reporting methods

You may submit a single story or a series (up to 5 pieces). Broadcast entries must include a transcript and a short clip. Each journalist or outlet can only submit two entries.

To enter, you’ll need:

  • A copy of the published or aired story
  • A short motivation (max 500 words) describing the background, impact, and challenges faced
  • A 100-word bio and high-res photo
  • A high-res logo from your media outlet

Deadline:
Submit your entry by 15 July 2025 at 17:00 (SAST).
