Ugandan farmers have turned to the government for stronger policies to encourage the use of indigenous seeds. They hope this strategy will counter the flood of fake seeds in local markets.
Mario Mungu-Acel is the national chairperson of the Ugandan branch of the Eastern and Southern Africa Farmers’ Forum. He says: “Seed dealers are disappointing us with seeds that don’t germinate and are not drought-resistant. What we want is that government gives us technocrats who can advise farmers on agroecological farming if we are to fight hunger.”
In August, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Feed, and Fisheries announced a campaign to promote quality seeds to small-scale and commercial farmers. The ministry will certify and label quality seeds by seed companies and foundations.
