Nigeria: Imminent locust and quelea bird infestations to destroy crops (AllAfrica)

The federal government is warning farmers that swarms of locusts and quelea birds are about to invade farmers’ fields in northern Nigeria.

Some farmers have already reported quelea bird attacks. The farmers have been covering their crops with nets to protect them. But experts say this solution is not sustainable in the long-term because it increases the cost of production.

Locusts and quelea birds are dangerous because they can wipe out everything in farmers’ fields within hours or days.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has assured farmers that it is designing a strategy to control the invasion.
