Nigeria’s war against the Boko Haram insurgency is leading to a growing humanitarian emergency. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that more than three million people are in need.
Insecurity in northeast Nigeria has disrupted farming and markets across the region, severely impacting food security. The Famine Early Warning Network predicts that, between July and September, several areas in the region will face “emergency” levels of food shortages, one step below famine.
One and a half million people are internally displaced. Mustapha Zannah is a lawyer in the region’s largest city, Maiduguri. At the beginning of the year he was sheltering one family, but has since added four more. He says, “People are stressed. People are tired. Things are very difficult.”
