As Ebola cases continued to emerge in Uganda, access to accurate and timely information was essential to help communities protect themselves. Community Green Radio (Kiboga FM 103.9) partnered with Tokiiya Group, on behalf of Uganda’s Ministry of Health, to broadcast trusted Ebola awareness messages across its airwaves.
The station has been airing public health messages designed to help listeners recognize the signs and symptoms of Ebola, understand how the disease spreads, learn how to prevent infection, and know where to seek medical attention if they suspect a case. The public health campaign aims to ensure that reliable information reaches communities consistently throughout the day.
Mr. Kyamanywa Julius, station manager at Community Green Radio, says, “We wanted to help our audience understand the signs of Ebola, how it spreads, how it can be prevented, and where to seek help if they suspected a case.”
To maximize the reach of these messages, the station broadcasts pre-recorded public service announcements alongside regular live DJ mentions throughout its broadcast schedule. Rather than limiting awareness to a single program, the messages are woven into the station’s daily programming, helping ensure listeners encounter them multiple times.
Accuracy remains a top priority throughout the campaign. By collaborating with Tokiiya Group and the Ministry of Health, the station ensures every message shared with listeners reflects official public health guidance.
Mr. Kyamanywa says, “We relied on a trusted agency, having worked with them for some time and because of its close relationship with the government, particularly the Ministry of Health.”
Although the campaign focuses primarily on public awareness rather than audience interaction, Mr. Kyamanywa believes the broadcasts play an important role in informing the community about the outbreak and the actions people can take to stay safe.
Mr. Kyamanywa believes radio stations can play an even greater role during public health emergencies by going beyond public service announcements and creating opportunities for dialogue. He says, “Broadcasters can integrate Ebola messages into their regular programming and invite experts and community advocates to discuss prevention and case management.”
For Community Green Radio, the experience reinforces the important role local radio stations play in sharing trusted information during health emergencies. By working closely with health authorities and delivering clear, consistent messages, broadcasters can help communities make informed decisions when they matter most.
