‘When it rains’: The role of trees and shrubs in preventing soil erosion

The last story in our series on soil health describes an interesting system that farmers are using in Burkina Faso. In dry regions, they plant trees and shrubs around their fields, and find that this conserves soil and water.

In the script chosen for this week, farmers in one village lost all their crops. But a neighboring village did not suffer! The difference was that the neighboring village had planted their crops between hedgerows. The farmers found that the trees protected the soil on their sloping fields.
