This week’s Farmer story from DRC talks about using Mucuna pruriens to manage weeds and improve soil fertility. Our Script of the week is a short piece from earlier days of Farm Radio that talks about a few other uses for Mucuna pruriens, also known as velvet bean.
In the script, a farmer recommends planting velvet bean as a shade plant, noting that, at the same time, velvet bean will improve their soil.
Plus, you can eat velvet beans. The script even provides two simple velvet bean recipes!
But though velvet beans contain a lot of protein and are very nutritious, eaters should be careful: velvet beans also contain a toxin—which means that you should not eat too many velvet beans!
