The bicycle is a very common form of transport in Africa, for both people and goods. It is cheap, easy to maintain and convenient. This week’s Script of the Week shows how bicycles can be used for other purposes. In Arusha, Tanzania, bicycles are being used to provide the energy to shell maize. Many more bags of maize can be shelled in a day using a bicycle-powered maize sheller than by hand. The script is based on original interviews with farmers.
