Sekedo, a drought-resistant sorghum for Karamoja

One of our news stories this week announces that trials of genetically modified maize have been given the go ahead in Uganda and Kenya. But there are other options besides biotechnology in drought-prone areas. Sorghum or millet are valuable alternative staple crops in dry regions. While many farmers prefer maize, it does not perform well if rains fail or are insufficient. This week’s script of the week features a farmer, Charles Lon’goli, from northern Uganda. He talks about why he chose to plant a new variety of sorghum, and the practices he follows to give it the best chance of performing well.
