No more female genital cutting: Villages in Senegal celebrate 10 years of women’s rights

International Women’s Day marks women’s achievements and progress made on women’s issues. In 2007, the 10th anniversary of the Malicounda Bambara Declaration was celebrated in Senegal. The Declaration was a statement by a group of women in the Malicounda Bambara area of western Senegal that they would no longer subject their daughters to the widespread practice of female genital cutting, or female genital mutilation. Within 10 years of the Declaration, 2300 other Senegalese communities had joined this group of women in banning female genital cutting in their communities.

This script was written by a trainer who worked for the NGO that was instrumental in raising the women’s awareness of the issue and framing it as a matter of human rights and women’s rights. The script contains interviews with two women who were closely involved in banning the practice and establishing the Declaration in their community.
