Mother of twins: New maize variety enriches and nourishes Ugandan farmers

Our script of the week profiles Ugandan farmers who grow and sell quality protein maize, also known as QPM. The variety of maize they are growing is called Nalongo in the local language, or “Mother of twins.”
The script shows how farmers can improve their income and food security by growing this variety. QPM matures more quickly than other varieties (in a little more than three months) and, when harvested, the cobs are heavier, making it a successful commercial food crop.

Because it has much more protein than traditional varieties, it can help address malnutrition in children and adults. It is especially helpful for the sick, and for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.
