This week’s story from Kenya introduces a few different systems for storing rainwater. Our Script of the week is an Issue pack that explores methods for capturing rainwater in more detail.
Water scarcity already affects more than a third of the world’s population. With climate change, that number will undoubtedly increase. But there are many practical solutions to water shortages. One solution is water harvesting. Rainwater harvesting—often with a roof to catch water and a storage tank—is used extensively, while there are many traditional and modern systems for harvesting surface water and ground water.
Though they are not discussed in this Issue pack, other strategies to adapt to water scarcity include recycling water, enacting and enforcing laws to protect streams and rivers, and planting drought-tolerant crops and crop varieties.
This Issue pack begins with three stories about farmers harvesting water. It then offers some background information on the different types of water harvesting. Next, it suggests some starting points for creating locally relevant radio programs on water harvesting. Finally, it points to various resources on water harvesting—radio programs, documents, and organizations.
