Diversification on the farm

This week’s Farmer story from Kenya talks about the benefits of diversifying the crops farmers grow, and mentions several practices which increase diversity on the farm, including crop rotation and intercropping.

Our Script of the week also talks about crop diversification. It presents a short story about two farmers who are interested in growing a new and highly-promoted, high-yielding crop. One farmer plants his entire farm to the new crop, while the other devotes only one-quarter of his field. The new crop does very well! But, because so many farmers grew the new crop, the price they receive is very low—and the farmer who grew only the one, highly-promoted crop is in trouble.

The script shows how diversifying your crops can reduce your financial risk and protect you from the risks of unpredictable weather—just two of the benefits of crop diversification.
