Deforestation is the focus of two of this week’s stories. Our Script of the week also looks at the topic.

Deforestation and the resulting shortage of fuelwood affect the lives of millions of people. People suffer in a variety of ways, some of which are not always visible. Women and children in particular spend many hours of their lives in search of fuel, often walking many kilometres every day.

This drama illustrates some of the effects of deforestation on the health of women and their families. Three women tell the story of how deforestation affects them, and what they are doing to cope with it.

A follow-up radio broadcast could interview local women about the effect of environmental degradation on their lives. How does their situation today differ from earlier times? How do these changes affect their daily lives—the way they farm, eat, and spend their time?
