World Day to Combat Desertification

Environmental degradation is serious, and is being worsened by the changing climate. Unsustainable farming, mining, overgrazing, and clear-cutting contribute to the degradation of dryland areas. The result is poor soil, which lacks nutrients and erodes more easily. More frequent droughts will only further exacerbate the situation.

Desertification affects biodiversity, poverty, socio-economic stability, and sustainable development. What can be done? Reforestation and soil conservation are two actions that can prevent erosion.
