World Day Against Child Labour: NO to child labour – YES to quality education!

The International Labour Organization, or ILO, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the actions and efforts needed to eliminate it.

Every year on June 12, the Day brings together governments, employers and workers’ organizations, civil society, and millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.

According to ILO, the abuse of children in domestic work is all too common. Around the world, large numbers of children are engaged in paid or unpaid domestic work. These children are particularly vulnerable to exploitation. Their work is often hidden from the public eye, they may be isolated, and they may work far from their family home.

The theme for 2015 is NO to child labour – YES to quality education! It focuses on the importance of quality education as a key step in tackling child labour.

The most recent global estimates suggest that some 120 million children between five and 14 years of age are involved in child labour. Girls and boys are almost equally represented.

ILO says that the persistence of child labour is rooted in poverty, the lack of social protection, and a failure to ensure that all children attend school until they are legally old enough to find employment.
