Tips for asking gender-responsive questions

Gender analysis looks at how women’s and men’s roles, rights and responsibilities interact and how they affect a given issue. In journalism, gender analysis examines how these factors affect the responses that journalists and researchers receive from the women and men they interview.

When journalists and researchers recognize that women and men have different roles and responsibilities in small-scale family farming and forest-based businesses, they can modify the types of questions they ask in order to gather accurate information on the real issues facing men and women.

Conducting a gender analysis means expanding an investigation beyond what is immediately obvious. It means going beyond a consideration of what is under men’s control (which is usually visible and obvious) to discovering how best to bring women’s often “invisible” activities to light.

African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) is an organization which seeks to help women agricultural scientists across sub-Saharan Africa to boost agricultural development by strengthening their research and leadership skills.

The organization has produced a list of ideas to help journalists and researchers get meaningful responses from women and men, and be aware of how gender affects the division of labour, livelihoods, and access to and control over resources.
