Survey report: Community Participation at Local and Community Radio Stations

In order to gain a deeper understanding of practices and challenges at community and local radio stations, the Catholic Media Council examined the involvement of radio stations’ communities in programming, management, ownership, and funding. This report presents the main findings of three regional surveys on participation at local and community radio stations − in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Pacific.

The report describes the most common forms of listener involvement, and how this varies between continents. It goes on to describe successful strategies for increasing community involvement, such as listeners’ clubs and community events. It shows how lack of funds is an issue for many stations and listeners, and outlines strategies from different countries for managing and raising funds.

The report also looks at the social change and advocacy role that community radio can play, and how stations can give audiences a voice and change attitudes and practices. Examples are provided.
