Security in-a-box: Tools and tactics for digital security

Security in-a-box is an online guide designed to help advocates and human rights defenders protect their computer records and general privacy from malicious intrusion by security agencies and other hackers. The guide is a collaboration between the Tactical Technology Collective and Front Line Defenders.

Each guide includes a freeware or open source software tool, and instructions on how to use that tool to secure your computer, protect your information and maintain the privacy of your Internet communication.

Chapter 1 is entitled How to protect your computer from malware and hackers. It explains why keeping your computer healthy is critical to better security. It’s important to take the first step of ensuring that your computer is not vulnerable to hackers or plagued by malicious software such as viruses and spyware – before you worry too much about strong passwords, private communication and secure deletion.
