The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is celebrating International Literacy Day on September 8, 2013.

Its Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) has many educational documents on its webpage which are available for download as PDF files at: http://uil.unesco.org/en/downloads/. You can find older downloads in their archive.

UIL does a major part of their work in Africa. The focus of UIL’s work in Africa is strengthening literacy via non-formal and adult education, with the aim of integrating lifelong learning into national education.

In particular, UIL is concerned with promoting the use of African languages in building literate environments and lifelong learning. You can read more about this aspect of their literacy programs on their website:  http://uil.unesco.org/en/home/programme-areas/priority-africa/

An “infographic” on the subject of illiteracy was produced by UNESCO’s Institute for Statistics. It is available at this link: http://www.uis.unesco.org/literacy/Documents/Intl-literacy-day/literacy-infographic-2013-en.pdf
