May 20th is World Bee Day. This could be a good time to prepare a radio program about the benefits of beekeeping, and the importance of bees to successful farming.

Bees produce honey and wax, which farmers can sell to earn money. Bees bring other benefits, too. They pollinate crops, which means that they carry pollen from plant to plant—which helps the new fruits and seeds to form. So if you keep bees, your crop yields may increase.

But bees are threatened by the use of some chemical pesticides. Here is a resource explaining why bees and pesticides don’t mix: http://scripts.farmradio.fm/radio-resource-packs/package-50-farming-for-the-future/why-bees-and-pesticides-dont-mix/

Here is a story about a honey project in a mountain village in the Kingdom of eSwatini, also known as Swaziland. It explains some of the problems the villagers faced and the creative solutions they found to make their project a success. http://scripts.farmradio.fm/radio-resource-packs/package-48/the-beekeepers-of-shewula/

And here is a discussion about improved honey production and processing methods in Kenya: http://scripts.farmradio.fm/radio-resource-packs/package-79/improved-honey-production-and-processing-in-dryland-kenya/
