Reporters Without Borders’ Press Freedom Index 2016

Reporters Without Borders, or RSF, has released their annual World Press Freedom Index, which provides a snapshot of the media freedom situation around the world, and ranks 180 countries.

This year’s index shows a decline in press freedom. “It is unfortunately clear that many of the world’s leaders are developing a form of paranoia about legitimate journalism,” writes Christophe Deloire, secretary-general of RSF.

Europe once again ranked as the region with the freest media. For the first time since the World Press Freedom Index was released in 2002, Africa outranked the Americas on press freedom. This is mainly due to an increase in violence against journalists in the Americas.
