Following the end of COP26, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) published an article on the highlights and important moments of the conference.
IFAD notes that a positive development of the conference is an understanding of the priority and importance of climate change. Rich countries such as the US promised money for developing countries to assist in adapting to climate change in the Paris Agreement, but the money was not forthcoming. An outcome of COP26 is the recognition of this and a renewed sense of the necessity of such funding.
IFAD’s Goodwill ambassadors, Sabrina Dhowre Elba and Idris Elba, provided this critique of the conference: “It is deeply unfair that the people who contribute so little towards climate change are bearing the brunt of it.” Two new commitments were made at the meeting: some countries committed to halting deforestation by 2030, and others to reducing emissions of methane.
