No to child labour in domestic work – World Day Against Child Labour, June 12, 2013

The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the first World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL) in 2002 to highlight the plight of underage children who are forced to work. The day, which is observed on June 12, is intended to serve as a catalyst for the growing worldwide movement against child labour.

Around the world, large numbers of children are engaged in paid or unpaid domestic work in the home of a third party or employer. These children can be particularly vulnerable to exploitation.

Their work is often hidden from the public eye, they may be isolated, and they may be working far away from their family home. Stories of the abuse of children in domestic work are all too common.

The World Day Against Child Labour promotes awareness and action to tackle child labour. Support has been growing each year. In 2013, the ILO hopes that this World Day will again be supported widely.

Civil society organizations play an important role in the worldwide movement against child labour, and believe that it is a priority to build the worldwide movement towards eliminating child labour and protect young workers of legal working age in domestic work at the global, national and local level.
