The contest is funded and organized by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Cash prizes are awarded in four categories: Mobile, Authenticity, Sustainability and Community.

The Mobile category seeks innovative ideas on producing, delivering, distributing, and consuming news and information on all types of mobile-communication devices.

The Authenticity category looks for projects that help people better understand the reliability of news and information sources.

The Sustainability category seeks ideas on new economic models for supporting news and information that improve the way citizens run their communities and their lives.

The Community category seeks groundbreaking technologies that support news and information specifically within geographically-defined areas.
