Compost, often known as “composted manure” in Africa, and one type of organic fertilizer, is important for naturally boosting soil fertility. The Institute for Sustainable Development in Ethiopia has produced a manual called “How to make and use compost.” This 61-page report is part of a larger document called Climate Change and Food Systems Resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa, which was produced by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

The chapter on compost starts with a little background information on healthy soil, and on the nature and benefits of compost. Then it provides detailed information on how to make your own compost, troubleshooting problems, the best types of materials to use, farmers’ experiences, and covers several different types of compost-making.

The document is written in accessible, non-technical language.
