The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is a global campaign dedicated to ending gender-based violence. The campaign starts on Nov. 25—the International Day for the Elimination of Gender-Based Violence—and ends on Dec. 10, Human Rights Day. These dates were chosen to emphasize the fact that gender-based violence is a violation of human rights.

The campaign period includes other significant dates, such as International Women Human Rights Defenders Day (Nov. 29) and World AIDS Day (Dec. 6).

Most women will experience some form of gender-based violence in their lifetime, including harassment, assault, harmful cultural practices, domestic violence, and others.

Search for Common Ground has created audio guides to help journalists understand key concepts and make their reporting more sensitive to gender-based violence.

To get started on making your reporting more sensitive, ask yourself:

  • Do you consciously seek out the voices of women? Do you treat women sources the same way as you treat men?
  • When asking policy-related questions, do you consider the different impacts of policies on women and men?
  • When you plan how to write a story, do you consider the secondary violence that may happen to women in powerless positions who are quoted or profiled in the story? Do you discuss this with them and find ways around it?
  • Do you use stories on gender violence not just to highlight the plight of the individuals concerned, but also the underlying issues?
  • Whose stories are being told? Whose stories are not being told?
  • Is all the information included relevant to the story? Is there information missing that would help us better understand the story?
