Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards in Africa

    The Wikimedia Foundation has launched the inaugural Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards to celebrate the contributions of journalists in Africa who prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in their reporting. Only written and published articles in English will be accepted for the awards.


    There are four categories for submissions:

    • Arts, culture, heritage, and sports
    • Health, climate change, and environment
    • Women and youth
    • Digital and human rights


    The first-place recipient will receive $2,000 US, a trophy, a certificate of recognition, and an opportunity to join Wikimedians at the African Regional Conference, Wiki Indaba, in November 2023. The second-place recipient will receive $1,500 US and a certificate of recognition.

    The deadline to apply is June 30, 2023.
