Marine conservation writing opportunity with Mongabay

Journalists in West Africa are invited to take part in a reporting initiative from Mongabay that will explore innovative practices, policies, and technologies in marine conservation and the fisheries industry. Mongabay.org [1] is the world’s most popular rainforest information site and a well-known source of reporting and analysis on environmental news.

The project will cover a wide variety of story lines around the globe, while prioritizing those that focus on efforts to reduce illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing in overfished regions.

Proposals should be approximately 800 to 2,000 words and include quotes from at least three or four original interviews. Authors will be expected to provide 5-10 publishable photos to accompany their articles, along with captions and photo credits.

Mongabay will also consider proposals for fully edited and produced videos up to 10 minutes in length. Mongabay will negotiate all fees and contracts on a per-story basis. Completed stories will be paid per word, and rates will depend on the journalist’s experience and the complexity of the reporting.

To submit your pitch of approximately 500 words, visit: https://form.jotform.com/90664307525155 [2]

Applicants must include their journalism resume and three samples of their work.

The pitch should clearly explain the specific subject you would like to write about and your approach to covering it, describe a few potential sources, and include an itemized estimate of any travel funding needed to complete the project. Please note that travel funds are limited and available only for regional journeys.

Applications must be submitted in English.

Pitches will be considered on a rolling basis until August 1, 2019. Stories must be published by November 15, 2019.
